I’ve always wanted to take part in a yearly photography project but I never knew where or how to begin. A few weeks ago, a friend and fellow photographer asked me to join her group and take part in their monthly project. I immediately like the sound of monthly – I could handle that! One of my goals for 2013 was to take more photos of my own family AND actually print photos. My hope, as I take part in this year long journey, is to find myself at the end of 2013 with an abundance of family photos. Photos that I would not have otherwise pushed myself to create. Marla, thank you for SO much for asking me to be part of this special project!
january | what winter looks like
Winter can be very long and dreary in Bellingham, Washington. When the sun actually makes an appearance, the days are completely transformed with brillance. I usually usher the kids outside as quickly as possible. Dressed in boots, hats and warm clothes, we launch ourselves into the cold but gorgeous light. Last month I found a new beach close to our house. There’s a small stream that flows into the lake – I’m completely enamored by the landscape. The kids LOVE the location. They build bridges, make boats out of logs, skip rocks and fish with branches. I feel like it’s a scene straight out of a children’s book. :)
While I know January does not yield many sun-filled days, I treasure each and every one. These days fill me with gratitude, allow me to let go of worry, and open my eyes to new adventures. It was important to capture these feelings while we played on the beach. I tried to stand back and photograph each moment as it really happened. Laughter, splashing, exploring and joy…….these are the ways I want to remember ‘what winter looks like’.
